Burgstraße
On the front of the elementary school on Burgstraße 9, there is a sgraffiti sundial with children playing during the four seasons — “Spring,” “Summer,” “Autumn and” “Winter” — by artist August Maninger.
At the top, the symbols “A” “&” “Ω”, a specific juxtaposition of Christian visual symbols used here to represent God.
The Greek letter “Alpha” on the left, and “Omega” on the right are the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet, signifying the phrase “I am Alpha and Omega” (“ἐγώ εἰμι τὸ Ἄλφα καὶ τὸ Ὦ”), from the Bible, The Book of Revelation verse 1:8, a text which had been originally written in Greek.
At Burgstraße 12, a single word in the phrase painted above the door, “an Helli Nazi sei Hoamat“, stands out. But this building had nothing to do with The National Socialist German Workers’ Party — what we think of as the Nazi Party.
Rather, this home belonged to the singer Ignaz Glatz, who died in 1927. He was known as “Helli Nazi,” and his name became associated with the local Werdenfels Singer Society.
Folk music was marketed in the late 1880s and early in 1900s in Garmisch. Members of the “Helli Nazi” music group famously performed the Schuhplattler — the knee and thigh slapping Alpine folk dance — for tourists at the nearby Hotel Husar, Gasthof zum Kainzenfranz, and the Hotel Werdenfelser Michl. Old postcards from that time (some available online) show these performers as mustachioed lads in lederhosen, posed in front of painted alpine backdrops.
However, Glatz sang not just for tourists, but for audiences and royalty all over Europe — in the major cities of Germany, Austria, Hungary, Russia, Belgium, and France.

On the wall above the balcony at Burgstraße 55, Gästhaus Reiter, a lüftlmalerei of Saint Hubertus re-done by Jorissen in 1957.3
Burgstraße 56, “Landhaus A. Rütz” built in 1959 and painted that same year by Isidor Winterholler.
Burgstraße 61, Gästehaus Christina. The smiling sun lüftlmalerei is a logo, of sorts, for the owner of this guest house, taken from their original property, Gästehaus Sonnenschein (“Sunshine”) on Hauptstraße, with lüftlmalerei there painted by Stephan Pfeffer.
