Lüftlmalereck

The “Mussldoma-Haus” at Lüftlmalereck 1 has three prominent Lüftlmalerei on its front, all painted by Franz Seraph Zwinck in 1787.1

For Jakob and Rupert Unhoch, sons of Johann Peter Unhoch, Franz Seraph Zwinck painted the two left-most frescoes “Mother of God – Refuge of Sinners” and an image of Saint Peter being handed the keys to the Kingdom of Heaven.2

According to the Vienna-based Dorotheum auction house’s website, an 18th century painting from Southern Germany which was either the basis for this Lüftlmalerei of Mary and Jesus, or inspired by the same source, sold at auction in 2020 into a private collection. Its estimated value had been between 1,000 and 1,500 EUR, or $1,200  and $1,800 US dollars.3

Whatever inscription there might have been beneath the Lüftlmalerei of Mary has long since been lost.

One can see the drastic difference between restorations in the murals here by comparing this photo from the Bavarian State Archives by August Beckert of the same Lüftlmalerei of Saint Peter taken about a century ago, around 1920 or 1930, with how it looks today.

The right-most fresco, an image of Saint Joseph, was painted for the sculptor Johann Joseph Lang (who died in 1807).4
